Sculpture Workshop
Back
Our A-Level 3D Design students recently had an inspiring and hands-on workshop with the incredible sculptor, James Wild! James, known for forging powerful narratives in scrap metal, spoke to our students about his journey since he started sculpting in Cornwall in 2009. He highlighted how resourcefulness is central to his unique creations, which explore the fascinating tension between the natural world and our modern age. Students were fascinated to hear about his portfolio of works, including an orangutan sculpture at the Eden Project and a 5m abstract sculpture (bigger than a double-decker bus)!
James also discussed how he has embraced modern technology, such as 3D modelling and VR, to help visualise his impressive large-scale work, making the art form more accessible. Following a Q&A session where he encouraged students to commit time to their creative inspirations, the students embarked on a practical workshop. The brief was to develop a sculpture concept for five flying swallows that would sit in a fountain in front of a manor house! They worked individually on creative development before collaborating in groups to refine their designs, encouraging them to think about movement and the three dimensional nature of sculpture.
