Timings & Procedures Reminder

16th November 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you for your support so far this year. We would like to remind you of some timings and procedures at Hertswood.

○ The student gates are opened from 7.30am every school day. They remain open until 8.40am. At this time they are locked until the end of the school day to ensure student safety. This is also to ensure that all students arrive to Registration in good time.

○ Students arriving after the gate has been closed, must enter through the Visitors’ entrance. If students arrive after 8.45am, they will be greeted by the Attendance Officer and marked in as late.

○ Registration (tutor time) is an important start to a student’s day. Not only are important notices handed out, but it is also an opportunity for a student to raise any concerns with their form tutor. It also helps a student to prepare for the rest of the day.

○ The school canteen is open for students from 7.45am until 8.30am, not only as a place to eat but also to meet their friends and socialise outside of the classroom. Hertswood provides free toast and cereal for all students. Other items are available to purchase, such as sausage and bacon rolls, pastries and even waffles and pancakes.

○ There are many studies proving that students that have eaten breakfast are more alert and ready to embed information much quicker than a student that has not eaten breakfast.

○ Tutor rooms are open from 8.30am for students once again to socialise with their peers and chat freely to their form tutor. Registration starts at 8.45am.

○ StudyZone is open from 3.00pm until 5.00pm. It is a quiet and peaceful space for students to complete homework or revision in a calm and supervised area. We appreciate that so often, it can be hard for students to find a quiet place to study at home.

○ If you need to meet with a member of staff a number of appointments are available on a daily basis from 4.00pm. Please contact the school office who will be happy to book you a meeting with a member of staff. Appointments are not available during the school day.

From Monday a Referral Room will be in use for Year 8 students. If students are sent out of their lessons they will go to the Referral Room, following which a detention will be issued on the same day from 3.00pm until 3.30pm. Parents will be also notified via a text message or MyEd app that day. We will also shortly be trialling a Go4Schools Detention Module to notify parents of detentions.

If you have not downloaded the MyEd app, then please do so. This is available on Android and iOS platforms. This is vital in home/school communication. It enables the school to send out notifications, for example snow days, Parents’ Evenings, etc. It also has links to ParentPay and Go4Schools. It is also where parents and carers can track their child’s academic progress and attendance. If you are unsure or have any questions, then please contact the school for any help and advice about the app.

If you have any further questions, please contact the school.

Yours faithfully

The Pastoral Team
