Oxford STEM Trip

Last week we were part of a group of twelve Year 10 students who were invited to Oxford University for an event encouraging women to take STEM subjects. The day began with a lecture on prime numbers, including different theories and the research into finding pairs of primes.

We had a hands-on session using problem solving skills to solve maths problems before another lecture about the advantage of taking maths at university, and all the possible jobs it can lead to. Meeting some current Oxford students studying maths was really interesting, giving us a chance to find out the benefits and challenges of studying at a higher level.

The day ended with a lecture about climate change, including the melting ice caps and how maths fits into a climatologist's job. We felt very inspired by the lectures we attended, which will help us to consider taking STEM subjects in the future.
